The Most Effective Way To Communicate With Kids With Autism

Good for people with autism

Picture symbols are a great way to start communication with a child or an early communicator and

what the communication partner can do is present pictures and the child can look reach or point to those pictures in order to indicate a choice or make a request

It’s very important to use motivating toys or activities especially in the beginning with communicators because you want to get as many opportunities as possible so the more motivated the child is to make a request or to indicate a choice the more opportunities

Yhey’re going to get to use that picture symbol and to assign meaning to it for our little ones are really motivating activities bubbles there’s it’s very specific on the communicator so you have to take into account a lot of personal preferences F

or little kids bubbles computer music seem to be very highly motivating with two choices that would be really important especially in the beginning to present one preferred activity or object and one non preferred activity or object so for example a child who may not like to eat that could be one of their options so preferred activities something they enjoy like bubbles and something that we know firsthand from experience that they don’t enjoy such as eating those would be two good options to pair together initially so for each child it will allow them to know that their choice has a specific purpose and it will increase the accuracy of their choice making

Sometimes it’s nice to use a more general picture symbol such as more because it will promote carryover to other activities so instead of just using a concrete representation of bubbles or food if by using a more general symbol such as more that’s something that can be carried over once they’ve learned that symbol to a variety of different activities and different environments so they could use that more just to request a continuation of the activity

Once you feel like the child has mastered choosing between a preferred and a non preferred item or activity and they’re making fairly consistent choices then you can start presenting to preferred choices

Once that consistency is there you can start presenting more choices it would be great ideally to start presenting more choices to give a child more chances for communication more requests or comments to initiate on their and step-by-step increase their vocabulary

The goal of any augmentative are alternative communication is to find a way to make communication fast and as easy, as possible digital photos are actually a really good starting point because it would allow the therapist or parent to just take a picture of a familiar object, or familiar food item, or toy, or activity it can always be laminated for durability but it’s something very familiar and concrete so that the communicator can recognize it easily

PCs are boardmaker symbols look like colored line drawings used to represent people objects places all different forms of words that someone would need to communicate symbol sticks are new form of fixture symbols that are commercially available and manufactured by a company called news to you there’s something that can be used as static picture symbols on a manual board but they also come pre-loaded on some speech generating devices

A unity icon screen you would see a lot of core language so language and words that we use all day every day for a variety of situations like I in you and want and like that it would allow you to combine those symbols to have a greater amount of vocabulary

Pick lines are a newer set of symbols that are commercially available they were developed as a larger project part of the picks on project kit they resemble very closely the prentke romich unity icons but they are single meaning and right now they’re used mainly for static or manual boards they’re not available on any of the speech generating devices it’s important to have a lot of different options because every communicator is different so every child adult is different in what clicks for them what registers what makes it easy once purposeful communication is established such as choice making that would be a good time to maybe consider an AAC evaluation either to see what the next step may be or to look long-term at what device might best meet their needs an AAC evaluation stands for augmentative and alternative communication evaluation usually consists of a speech-language pathologist and either an occupational therapist or physical therapist and what it would do is look at physical access to a device and the child’s language skills and try to feature match which kind of communication or speech generating device could most benefit that you presenting like insist maybe something maybe something li consists of a spirit benefit right of each li consists of a spirit li consists of a spirit service fee service fiercely consist of a spirit Lee consists of a spirit we consist of a sphere li consists of a spirit we consist of a spirit actually consists of a sphere actually consists of a spiritually consist of a sphere actually consists of a sphere they consist of a spirit they consist of a sphere actually consist of a sphere they consist of a sphere actually consist of a Spanish fleet consists of a sphere they consist of a sphere they consist of a spiritually consist of a Spanish fleet consists of a sphere actually consists of a specially consist of a sphere they consist of a spiritually consists of a spirit they consist of a spirit they consist of a spirit they consist of a spirit they consist of a sphere they consist of a spirit they consist of a Spanish fleet consists of a sphere they consist of a spirit they consist of a sphere they consist of a sphere plate consists of a spiritually consists of a sphere actually consists of a sphere they consist of a sphere they consist of a sphere actually consist of a sphere they consist of a sphere they consist of a sphere actually consists of a spirit they consist of a sphere actually consists of a spiritually consist of a speed light consists of a sphere actually consists of a speed light consists of a speed light consists of a speed light consists of a spirit plate consists of a sphere Lea consists of a sphere we consist of a spirit they consist of a spirit we consider service family consists of a spiritually consist of a sphere actually consists of a Spanish fleet consists of a spiritually consists of a sphere fleet consists of a sphere actually consists of a sphere Lee consists of a sphere Lee consists of a sphere Lee consists of a spirit Lee consists of a sphere Lee consists of a spiritually consists of a spiritually consist of a sphere we consist of a sphere we consist of a sphere actually consist of a sphere we consist of a speed benefit I defeat a fervor benefit might of he j4 benefit I defeat a fervor benefit right of he j4 benefit might ask each a fervor benefit by defeat a fervor
