Navigating Summer with Saar: Our Favorite Gifts for Autism

Hello everyone,

Hi there, my name is Amit, and I am a proud mother to my uniquely wonderful 17-year-old son, Saar. Like many kids his age, Saar loves the summer season – the sun’s warmth, the sense of freedom, and the opportunity to explore. However, as someone who has autism, Saar requires extra consideration when it comes to selecting the perfect summer gifts for him.

Over the years, I’ve discovered several gifts that bring joy to Saar and help him navigate the challenges of autism. Today, I’d like to share these favorites with you, hoping they might also bring joy to another child.

1. Fidget Toys

Saar has always had an abundance of energy, and fidget toys have been extremely helpful in allowing him to release it. Among his favorites is the fidget spinner, which is small enough to carry around and keeps his hands busy, aiding in his ability to focus and remain calm when feeling overwhelmed. The fidget cube is another excellent option, as it provides various fidgeting options and can fit comfortably in his pocket.

2. Sensory Toys

Sensory toys are another staple in our house. Saar has a weighted blanket that he uses when he needs a sense of calm and security. It helps him sleep better and has been a lifesaver for us. He also loves his light-up toy, which offers a mesmerizing light show that helps him stay focused.

3. Art Supplies

Saar has found solace in art as a means of therapy. He dedicates hours to drawing and crafting stories using his markers, showcasing his remarkable imagination. Witnessing his self-expression through art has been truly inspiring. Lately, we have introduced clay to his artistic repertoire, and he thoroughly enjoys molding his miniature universe.

4. Books

Saar has a strong passion for reading and is known to be a voracious reader. He enjoys immersing himself in chapter books and losing himself in captivating stories. The lesson provides him with an escape from reality and the opportunity to explore new worlds from the comfort of his favorite reading spot. He is also intrigued by non-fiction books, especially those that delve into animals and nature.

5. Outdoor Toys

With summer in full swing, outdoor toys are a must. Saar loves his bike. Riding around the neighborhood gives him a sense of independence and adventure. Swinging is another activity that he enjoys – there’s something about the wind in his hair and that sense of weightlessness that truly delights him.

Ultimately, what matters most is understanding and respecting Saar’s unique needs and interests. These gifts have been a hit because they appeal to him personally and offer the sensory input he often seeks. I hope sharing our favorite gifts might help other parents navigate the sometimes challenging waters of picking out gifts for an autistic child.

It’s essential to keep in mind that every child is unique. So while what might work for Saar may not necessarily work for every child, I firmly believe you can discover the ideal summer gifts for your child with patience, love, and a little creativity.

Until next time,

Amit

My name is Adi, and I am the proud parent of Saar, a lively 17-year-old who happens to have autism. I have created a blog, 101Autism.com, with the aim to share our family's journey and offer guidance to those who may be going through similar experiences. Saar, much like any other teenager, has a passion for football, cycling, and music. He is also a budding pianist and enjoys painting. However, his world is somewhat distinct. Loud sounds can be overwhelming, sudden changes can be unsettling, and understanding emotions can be challenging. Nevertheless, Saar is constantly learning and growing, and his unwavering resilience is truly remarkable.
