@slsm1234 Yes, we have Posey mitts, which are the same protective mitts they use in hospitals to protect self injurious patients. Unfortunately, my son is so darn strong (most autistics are) that when he punches, they usually fly off, no matter hard you try and secure them. Plus, I don’t like to deny him opportunity to suck his thumb, so it gets tricky when using gloves, if I keep them on, he gets madder cuz he can’t suck his thumb, but when I remove, he may start hitting again..

@orangebubble86 Wow, those doctors must be really on the ball, because nicotine patch is a very novel, emerging treatment in the field of autism and self injurious behavior. I wish all doctors dealing with autistic patients would be so up on things…that could be of greater help in situations like chronic self abuse.

@TheNarcMan Good point…though some people abuse drugs and alcohol because they have a neurotransmitter problem and are self medicating with dangerous substances instead of holistic interventions or something to balance brain.

To hold down a child and work with one with autism itself is a great feat BUT to love that child despite everything, well…that’s something else.
So many people give away their children for various reasons but you’ve kept yours despite his shortcomings…seeing people like you, I think the rest of us can re-evaluate our lives. You’re amazing!

I love the "I know I’m cute" caption. I was just thinking that. Keep strong people. I’m not religious, but I can’t help but be swayed by the idea that we only are given as much as we can handle. On the other hand, they are our children and I think that if we need to step up to protect them we just will, instinctively.

I am HFA. When I was 13 I broke my foot in 3 places, then walked a mile on it. At 47 I broke my leg in two places and my ankle. I took of my pants and told the doctors I didn’t want pain killers. They siad I have a high tollerance to pain. When I hit myself or hit my head against something, I feel very little pain. I use to run in temps over 100F and bike to work in temps below -20f. I don’t feel tired till I’m ready to fall over. Autistic = super powers.
    You are a super family!

I have a slow sister and a mentally ill brother. I know how parents think about such children all day. especially the Q"what will happen to him if i died?". Just know the God created him to test you and him. the more you two are patient the more God will reward you.

@kgaccount Hey girl – Hadn’t checked my youtube for a while – she’s great…but nothing compared to you and the moms out there like you. I have been profoundly affected (in a good way) by her career in this and it has made me so aware of the issues so many people face and i feel good knowing I can educate others on this and hopefully do a small part to spread awareness xoxo

@kgaccount The nicotine patch works wonders! I work doing ABA therapy with three autistic children, one of whom has always battled self injury and epilepsy all his life. His mom thought the docs were crazy when they suggested the patch but his behaviors and seizures have dramatically decreased. He’s been using the patch for 11 months and the turn around has been amazing! Best of luck with your journey 🙂
